Summary on Grant Application Form |
A service will be provided for UK universities, for the determination of molecular structure in the gas phase by electron diffraction, supported by ab initio calculations and other (spectroscopic) structural methods. Recent developments permit studies of more complexs~rkcEUre than were possible previously, extending the range of application of the service, particularl.) in the areas of transition metal chemistry and organic chemistry, which are expected to increase in their usage of the service during the four-year period. Main-group chemistry presents a rich choice of compounds, with structural problems to be tackled in the areas of boron and gallium chemistry, sterically crowded organosilicon compounds, compounds of the heavier elements of groups 15 and 16, cage-like molecules and fluorocarbon derivatives. Reactive intermediates formed by flash vacuum pyrolysis and similar techniques also merit investigation.
