The aim of this collaborative 4 year project with Penn State University, USA, is firstltm to construct a new generation of ToFSIMS instrument having very high sensitivity, the best spatial resolution attainable (50-100nm), unique capability in the mnaipulation of delicate samples at 100k and low cost. In order to enable static analysis at the highest resoltion together with rapid imaging, the second stage of the project will be the incorporation of a femtosecond laser system with a state of the art fsat digitiser for postionisation of spluttered neutrls.KORE Technology of Cambridge have produced engineering and electronic designs based on our ideas. Two instruments will be built, one in the US and one in the uK. In Stage1 construction and proving of the UK ToFSIMS will take 12-18 months. It will then be used for 12 months in analysis projects involving groups oin UMIST, Nottingham and Penn State. Stage2 will commence in month 30 and when the femtosecond laser systems will be installed. From month 32 to 48, studies using the total system will be carried out, particularly to explore and prove the capability for analytical imaging of very delicate chemical and bio-science materials. The ultimate aim is to be able to image cell chemistry.
