This application requests funds to construct a femtosecond spectrometer to conduct studies of coherent molecular dynamics in real-time. We propose to combine the technologies of femtosecond spectroscopy, surface science and molecular beams to probe ultra fast processes in interfacial and solvated environments. The thrust of the proposed research is directed towards determining the potential surfaces that control reactions and the mechanisms of coherence and population evolution. To achieve these goals complementary time-dependent experiments and theoretical calculations would be carried out. The experimental programme seeks to apply the technique of femtosecond hole-burning spectroscopy to elucidate molecular coherences in the ground electronic state. The interfacial work addresses the vibrational motions leading to neutral desoption from a surface and would provide the first experimental determination of a potential surface for desoption. The cluster investigations are aimed at answering the basic question of how a solvent facilitates a bimolecular reaction in the condensed phase by probing the time dependence under controlled salvation conditions. The proposed studies aim to give detailed insight into the critical and changing relationship between molecules and their surroundings during the course of a chemical reaction.
