Summary on Grant Application Form |
The applicants, together with the proposed research assistant, have begun a highly successful theory of finitely presented semi-groups. The programme will build on the theoretical developments already made and the computational tools already implemented. The theoretical development of Todd-Coxeter type enumeration procedures will continue, providing tools for determining the algebraic structure of a finitely presented semigroup in terms of groups. Rewriting methods have already been found for the determination of certain substructures and this work will be greatly extended. Rewriting techniques will be sought to study the groups of units of a monoid and the group of units of group and semigroup rings. The algorithms and semi-algorithms will be implemented to allow investigation of important semigroups and semigroup constructions. In particular semigroups which occur naturally in group theory, automata theory and the theory of formal languages will be studied using the tools developed as part of the programme.
