Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall objective of the Very High Speed Optical Systems programme, (VHSOS), is to investigate the issues involved in the design and implementation of a 10 Gb/s optical system, identify the areas of technology which are critical for such a system, demonstrate with a field demonstration the soundness of the adopted approach and lay the foundation for the commercial exploitation of the results by the participants. In detail the consortium will investigate the system design and the limitations due to components and the medium, the design approach to the critical electro-optic subsystems and the relevant technology, the technology issues for the digital functions of the system and the issues related to the implementation of both the system and the subsystems. It is envisaged that the project will be concluded with a field demonstration which will be the beginning of the exploitation of the results by the partners.
