Auxetic materials have a negative Poisson's ratio. Organic auxetics were first produced in the late 1980's and have shown that a negative Poisson's ratio is not only interesting but can have many benefits in a wide range of applications. Polymeric based auxetics suffer from disadvantages, both in terms of intrinsic stiffness and maximum usable temperature. In this project an attempt will be made to produce, for the first time, inorganic auxetic materials. The aims will be to define the conditions for the production of auxetic carbon and ceramic materials, to establish their mechanical performance and temperature stability, and to relate these properties to their unique microstructural features. It is expected that many mechanical improvements will be seen with conventional, non-auxetic carbon and ceramic products. These include enhanced shear properties, better indentation resistance, sound and shock absorption and thermal shock resistance. Thus a new range of materials with considerable potential for industrial development.
