Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will design and build a single-ended high-voltage DC power supply using high-frequency inverter technology coupled to a ferrite core high-voltage transformer for use with electrostatic precipitators. Novel aspects of this design will include the use of ferrites for HV isolation, efficient transfer of energy across such a barrier, and operation at unity power factor. It is envisaged that such a power supply will be more controllable and versatile and lead to greatly improved supply and precipitator efficiency under a wide variety of operating conditions. The supply will be accurately characterised using a laboratory model precipitator and under a wide variety of conditions at National Power PLC. During the project, technique will be examined for pulsing the waveform in an efficent manner and, if sucessful, the effect of pulsing on precipitator performance will be observed. Finally the supplky will be tested on a fully-operational precipitator. The project will extend the existing research on precipitators at Leicester Uni. which aims to further both the theoretical understanding on precipitation and the proctical aspects of precipitator design. Upon sucessful completion, the project will enable manufacturers and users to meet increasingly stringent environmental legislation considerably more cheaper than with conventional equipment.
