Summary on Grant Application Form |
Previous simulation and modelling work of cycloconverter drives has concentrated on the steady state characteristics of the drive. It is proposed to investigate the transient performance of the electrical cycloconverter propulsion schemes proposed for marine applications. Models of the cycloconverter and the prime movers will be developed at the University of Aberdeen whilst models of the electrical machines will be written at UMIST. All the models will be implemented using the Saber time domain simulator which will ensure that the models are compatible. Although Aberdeen and Manchester are a considerable distance apart it is proposed to make use of JANET e-mail to exchange information on the progress of the research programme on a daily basis. When the initial work developing the separate models is completed they will be joined together to form the complete propulsion system model. This will be used to predict the performance of the overall integrated system and the findings will be published in the public domain so that they can be used by electrical and mechanical engineers working in the marine environment.
