This project is concerned with modelling and linearisation of optical fibre systems used to convey multi-channel radio frequency signals. The overall objective is to be able to represent accurately the sources and the nature of the non-linearities primarily associated with the laser - so that these can be taken into account in the design and dimensioning of such sub-carrier multiplexed links. A further objective is to explore linearisation techniques which may enable a relatively low cost laser to be employed without compromising performance.Progress:Building upon previous theoretical work a thorough characterisation of the laser non-linear distortion and of its impact on system performance has been undertaken. The Volterra Series approach has been employed to render the problem tractable and to ensure that the results obtained can be applied to practical systems and a variety of modulation schemes. This has been established via a series of applications case studies. Experimental validation of the modelling has been undertaken and excellent agreement has been obtained between the measurements and the modelled non-linear transfer functions. Linearisation schemes have been explored and means whereby a relatively simple ad-hoc scheme may be formalised and design values derived from the non-linear modelling have been established. In order to make these techniques more generally accessible some effort is being put into developing software tools to support non-linear modelling and linearisation based upon the Volterra functionals approach.
