Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project aims to improve the performance of n-channel FDM systems (n>512) by introducing spectrum shaping and phase tracking for each channel. This eliminates the usual guard interval and the need for differential decoding. Three new techniques are involved:1. optimisation of spectral shaping through the use of phase shifters to minimise interchannel interference (and so restore orthogonality),2. frequency offset estimation from FFT samples of QPSK carriers,3. Viterbi decoding via cross-correlation. Considerable work has already been carried out for 2. and 3., resulting in publication. The work should result in new DSP algorithms together with simulation models and real-time evaluation of a complete system. Due to the large number of channels involved and the complexity of the DSP, the prototype system is targeted at low bit rate satellite systems, e.g. INMARSAT. The ability to adapt the bandwidth/number of channels used depending upon the source is also important. Overall, the proposed system should give improved power and bandwidth efficiency.
