Summary on Grant Application Form |
Design data for non-metallic gears, pulleys and cams are extremely limited. This programme will first build up a substantial body of reliable tests data, built up for as wide a range of composites, gear, pulley and cam geometries, operating conditions and duty cycles as possible. Second, it will develop a sound understanding of the mechanical and materials behaviour of the composite elements needed. Third, it will provide materials properties related to wear behaviour and failure mechanisms under these conditions. Models of wear and failure will enable materials choice and optimisation from the vast range of new high performance composites available to the designer. This will also be related to the processing of moulded components; at present little if anything is known about how different moulding conditions affect component performance. Fibre dispositions in moulded parts will be examined and related to performance. Studies will be made to suggest preferred orientations in terms of product performance. Finally, design procedures will be established which will use the information about the mechanical behaviour of gears and other drives to interpolate between the test results.
