Summary on Grant Application Form |
To investigate the support needed for multimedia servers to operate in a heterogeneous environment with a wide range of clients with different quality of service parameters such as display, size, resolution and frame rate, interconnected by a variety of networks. Progress: The major activity over the first four months of the project has been the installation of the network infrastructure to support the experimental work on the development of appropriate continuous media adaptors which must be placed at suitable points within the network. The network consists of a number of ATM switches and ethernet hubs. The ethernet hubs give the ability to provide a dedicated10 Mbits/sec to a number of target machines running either UNIX or Microsoft Windows. In addition there are a number of services, such as the multimedia fileserver, and machines connected directly to the ATM switch. This provides a rich environment for experimentation. In parallel work is being carried out in identifying those points of the network where the continuous media adaptors should be situated. One clearly identified point is between the multimedia fileserver and those machines running Microsoft windows because of the incompatibility of the operating systems' philosophies.
