Summary on Grant Application Form |
To exploit residual redundancy (source criteria) in transmitted low bit rate speech parameters to improve the performance of the channel decoder.Progress:Source criteria have been investigated for a 7.65 kb/s PRELP codec. The parameters involved are: the spectral parameters (LSF), the long term prediction lag and gain and also the excitation gain. So far, the source criteria for the LSF and excitation gains have been quantified and interpreted in a manner that has allowed them to be incorporated into the trellis decoding of Reed-Solomon codes taking the gross bit rate to 13.6 kb/s. The immediate improvement has been two fold: 1) Trellis decoding of RS codes is quite complex. The inclusion of these criteria has resulted in further proving of the trellis leading to a significant reduction in decoding complexity.2) Informal listening tests have shown that decoding performance with source criteria is significantly higher than that of the full search trellis decoder. We expect these improvements to be even more significant when source criteria on the long term prediction parameters is quantified and incorporated.
