Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed programme is for an investigation of through-thickness test methods on composite laminates. The work will develop test methods using an iterative process of practical testing on thick and thin laminates coupled with finite element analysis. Analysis and testing will be on carbon fibre/epoxy laminates of different layups. A second phase will use the proven test methods to provide input data for finite element codes in the analysis of structural details which require 3-D property information. The programme will commence with the characterisation of the in-plane stiffness and strength properties of the laminates. In-plane and out-of-plane elastic constants will also be determined using an ultrasonics approach. A comprehensive practical and finite element study of a number of techniques which are of interest to the proposers will be carried out. These include several shear test methods (notched beam, short beam and thick adherend); two interlaminar tensile tests; and plane strain compression. The property data obtained will be used in finite element codes giving results for a series of structural problems to be compared with results using the current approach which is based on estimates from 2-D data, or guesswork.
