The object of this work is to develop and understand new methods of polymerising acrylic monomers to AB block copolymers, where B contains suitable functionality for subsequent crosslinking to star polymers. Initial polymerisation will utilise Screened Anionic Polymerisation, synthesis of block copolymers will allow for a better understanding of this new system and determination of its capabilities. A range of functionality will be used including siloxy, hydroxy and acid groups. The appropriate difunctional crosslinking agents will be used, primarily diisocyanates, as well as catalytic crosslinking in the case of siloxy functionality to form novel star copolymers where the density of the core can easily be varied. The work will be extended to ABC tri-blocks where a second functionality is introduced resulting in heterophase triphase star polymers. The outer layer will be constructed so as to allow water dispersibility and/or biodegradability. These heterophase star polymers will have a large density of functionality at the molecular surface. At all stages the products will be fully characterised so as to rigorously test the novel synthetic methodology. Guest host interactions will be investigated with bio-active molecules with a view to utilising these new polymer as biodegradable delivery systems. Other applications will be sought as the synthetic methodology is developed.
