Summary on Grant Application Form
Test the TOF apparatus on the multi photon dissociation of H2. Then study the ion charge and kinetic energy distributions produced from Co2 under multi photon absorbtion in a strong (~1015 x/cm2) field both when the CO2 is in the ground state and an excited vibrational mode distribution. Also measure the metastable fragment production. Repeat study for N2O. Develop electron TOF part of spectrometer. In addition to being of fundamental interest, understanding of these interactions is necessary to enable MP processes to be used as a diagnostic technique in analysing the excited molecular states in gaseous and surface discharges. The analysis of neutral particles 'dislodged' from surface sites is also possible by this method. This work will also serve as a means of comparing between different theoretical approaches to the problem. It should also help foster closer collaboration between theorists and experimentalists in the UK.
