Summary on Grant Application Form
The synthesis and characterisation of polymeric systems as membranes for application as solid polymer electrolytes will be undertaken. A number of fundamentally different macro structures will be examined, including interpenetrating networks, discrete dispersed phase systems and graft copolymers. The objective in preparing these hydrophilic polymers and copolymers, characterised by a variety of accessible functional groups, will be to maximise ionic mobility. The morphology of the materials will be studied to elucidate the factors critical to membrane performance, specifically hydraulic and ionic properties of the hydrated systems. Materials analysis will be in the terms of both physical and chemical properties, with the emphasis on hydraulic permeability, electrolytic conductivity, hydrogen and oxygen transmission, thermal, hydraulic and dimensional stabilities. Comparisons will be made with existing proton exchange membranes from Dow and DuPont. Sample SPE's from the most promising preparations will be submitted to industry for evaluation in small scale tests cells.
