Summary on Grant Application Form |
The synthesis and characterisation of polymeric systems as membranes for application as a solid polymer electrolytes will be undertaken. The proposed programme has been formulated to maximise the use of expertise and facilities at both the University of Surrey and RMCS.A number of fundamentally different macro structures will be examined, including inter-penetrating network, discrete dispersed phase polymer systems and graft copolymers. The objective in preparing these hydrophilic polymers and copolymers, characterised by a variety of accessible functional groups will be to maximise ionic mobility. The morphology of the materials will be studied to elucidate the factors critical to membrane performance specifically the hydraulic and ionic properties of the hydrated systems. The materials will be analysed physically and chemically with the emphasis on hydraulic permeability electrolytic conductivity, hydrogen and oxygen transmission and thermal, hydrolytic and dimensional stabilities.Comparisons will be made with existing proton exchange membrane from DOW and DuPONT and sample SPE's from the most promising preparations will be submitted to industry for evaluation in small scale test cells.
