Summary on Grant Application Form
This project has two main goals. The first is to establish a facility in Sheffield for fabrication and testing of organic EL devices. The second is to undertake a study of the properties of two new polymer families, making use of several innovations in device fabrication. One of these is a family of polyarylene vinylenes that are prepared by a new precursor route that allows considerable variations in processing and conversion conditions relative to the standard route. This will allow an in depth assessment of the significance of materials preparation and device fabrication procedures (i.e. extrinsic factors) on device performance and we will undertake a study to determine optimum conditions. The other is a family of dialkoxy substituted PPVs that have been designed to allow control over morphology, electronic response and stability. We will make comparative analyses of these two families to assess the competing merits of the two approaches to film forming conjugated polymers, especially in respect of device longevity issues. We also plan to investigate composite device structures in which dopant molecules are dispersed in the conjugated polymer host. Finally, we will undertake a detailed study of the photoxidative stability of these two families and examine its dependence on chemical structure, morphology, post deposition treatments etc.
