Summary on Grant Application Form |
The objectives will be to provide numerically based programmes that are able to predict the path of solidification and later homogenisation in multi-component alloys. The outputs will be liquid / solid compositions and fraction solid as a function of temperature, and graphical representations of the expected microstructure. The programmes will treat the growth of a single solid phase predicting whether the structure should be cellular or dendritic, and predicting the spacing and tip undercooling. Solid state diffusion will be included as will an allowance for coarsening. The programmes will treat simple eutectic and peritectic reactions. It should also be possible to include reactions involving three solid phases. It is proposed that two user friendly programmes running on personal computers be developed. The first programme would use simple linearised data and would be suitable for university students investigating binary and ternary systems. A more detailed data base could be included such as the NPL MTDATA which would allow the programme to be suitable for commercial use for the investigation and design of alloys.
