Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposed theory is to find a general framework within which to study the representation theory of W-algebras, which are the appropriate symmetryalgebras of two-dimensional conformal field theory (cft). The approach will be to investigate the structure of Verma modules, and in particular to try to extend the role of Kazhdan-Lusztig theory found in Lie algebras and finite W-algebras to the W-algebras of cft. The results for finite W-algebras suggest that Kazhdan-Lusztig theory plays a fundamental role in the class of W-algebras related to Lie algebras. These can all be defined by a BRST procedure. We expect that progress in these two directions will give important new insights into the problem of classification of W-algebras.
