To achieve safe and efficient management of transportation networks the level of pedestrian activity is an essential metric. This is however lacking or rudimentary at most existing signalised junctions. The aims of this research are to develop algorithms for the automatic visual sensing of pedestrian demand and to compare the operational characteristics of smart vision sensors with alternative pedestrian sensors. The study will, with the co-operation of Lothian Regional Council, focus upon the application of computer vision to new PUFFIN crossing sites in Edinburgh. While there are significant advantages with PUFFIN over the PELICAN crossing, the PUFFIN pedestrian detectors are far from perfect. Further research is therefore necessary to investigate a way for the number of pedestrians waiting at a crossing to be measured. A quantitative comparison between the proposed computer vision solution and currently employed sensor technology for pedestrian detection will be undertaken. Manual analysis of video recordings will provide the basis for comparison. By the end of the project a functional description of hardware and software will be defined to enable subsequent exploitation of the research findings.
