Summary on Grant Application Form |
This programme is intended to improve the efficiency of computer-aided engineering design by supporting the concurrent re-use of existing design information with an object-oriented database system. Existing designs may exist in several versions and we will investigate the mechanisms by which these design versions may be represented, combined and edited to provide new designs. A significant part of this effort will be to investigate fully the semantics and protocols for inter-designer communications. These communications will be necessary when collaborating designers change component artefacts which may affect other components undergoing concurrent development. We intend using as a realistic focus for our work, the domain of bridge design due to the expertise of one of the applicants in this field. We will use the object-oriented database system Versant to produce a design environment in which designers using partitioned design databases holding multiple design component versions may concurrently develop new bridge designs. The initial stage of the project will build a database of bridge designs using data supplied by OVE ARUP with a database system that supports versioning. This will then be extended with the routines that support inter-designer communication and a prototype design system that will be built and tested.
