Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme proposed here will systematically investigate the mechanisms of optically induced poling of suitable ferroelectric crystals, for the fabrication of periodically poled devices to be used in nonlinear interactions. Two principle domain orientations involving photorefractive and screening fields respectively will be studied, and the nonlinear coefficients d31 and d33 will be evaluated. Domain stability, quality, and uniformity will also be studied. Waveguiding and studies within 90 orientated domains will also be undertaken, and a novel method for optically induced 90 domain waveguide fabrication will be evaluated. All of these studies will be carried out in bulk crystals initially, but planar waveguides, grown via ion-beam implantation, will also be incorporated within the work programme. Once planar domain grating formation has been studied and characterised, the work will extend to more complicated curved grating geometries.
