Pre-swirl nozzles are often used to supply the blade-cooling air for gas turbines, but the air can be contaminated with the hotter disc-cooling flow and with hot gas ingested into the wheel-space between the turbine disc and the adjacent stationary casing. The internal-air-system designer needs to know, amongst other things, the pressure loss and temperature rise between the pre-swirl nozzles and blade-cooling passages, and the heat transfer and windage from the turbine disc. There are two different methods of transferring the cooling air from the pre-swirl nozzles to the blades: in one, the air flows axially across the wheel space; in the other, a cover-plate is attached to the turbine disc, and the air flows radially outward between the cover-plate and the disc. There are advantages and disadvantages for both methods, and it is the object of this computational and experimental project to compare the two. Measurements will be made on a modified rotor-stator pre-swirl rig, and a 3D multigrid elliptic solver will be developed and validated using the experimental data. The data and the computations will provide information and understanding for the gas-turbine designer.
