Summary on Grant Application Form
Coupled systems of differential-algebraic-integral equations (DAIEs) occur in the modelling of catalytic combustion in many chemical engineering situations. These equations have several special features for which there is little or no standard theory. First, there are non-Lipschitz nonlinearities in the differential-algebraic equations (DAEs), which cause all the existing codes we have tested to fail. Second, the kernel in the integral equation is badly behaved, which makes existing codes for integral equations very inefficient at best. Third, the coupling of the differential-algebraic equations with the integral equations is completely new and so no software (apart from that developed at Bath) exists to solve such problems. The aims of the project are to develop the numerical analysis and derive reliable numerical methods for the types of DAIE which arise in the combustion applications. The numerical methods will be tested on equations which model real applications and comparison will be made with actual experimental data. This work will be complemented by (but is distinct from) research on the mathematical modelling of catalytic combustion concurrently being carried out at Bath.
