A unique opportunity for an important and timely scientific collaboration has arisen. Professor C T Chen of the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter has developed a new, optically nonlinear crystal (data on this crystal have not so far been made available to the scientific community at large). He wishes to come to St Andrews, in August and September 1994, to collaborate with us in experimentally evaluating this crystal both as the gain medium in optical parametric oscillators as well as for frequency up- conversion applications (second harmonic generation, sum frequency mixing etc). St Andrews is his choice of location because of the exceptional range of optical parametric oscillators that have been developed here in recent years (extending from continuous-wave through nanosecond pulse to femtosecond pulse devices), and because of the links we have developed with him through our usage and investigation of other optically nonlinear materials he has developed.The proposed collaboration is an exceptional opportunity for enhancing the nonlinear optics research programmes in St Andrews. A successful outcome would leave us in an international lead position in the application of a new nonlinear material to a wide range of devices. Further, new opportunities for innovative research would continue well beyond the timescale of the actual visit.
