Summary on Grant Application Form |
Face pumping of very thin slabs of solid state laser material by multiple diode lasers bars will be investigated as a method of achieving area scalable laser power. For Nd: glass material, quasi-cw pulsed mode operation (500W pump power) will be used to investigate the properties of zig-zag and straight-through slab resonators, with pulse duty cycle being used to control the degree of thermal lensing and its effect on transverse mode selection. Single lateral waveguide mode operation will be investigated, with the use of a new mode selection. Single lateral waveguide mode operation will be investigated, with the use of a new mode selecting structures incorporated as a spatial patterning of the slab cladding layers. The prospects for true cw operation of Nd: glass will be assessed, and true cw demonstrated if possible. In parallel, cw diode bars combined with Nd: YAG or other crystalline materials will be used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the thin slab geometry lasers at cw pump powers up to 150W.
