Summary on Grant Application Form |
This application is connected with an application for a research assistant (GR/K24840) which is being submitted at the same time. Professor Ruberman is a Mathematician with a very good international reputation who has made important contributions to many of the topics considered in this proposal, particularly the aspects involving geometric topology. His doctorate was supervised by R Kirby and he is an expert in the techniques in 3 and 4-manifold topology, such as the Kirby calculus, associated with that school. On the other hand he has worked on a wide range of problems, combining geometry and topology. Thus Ruberman's visit would give the opportunity for extremely useful collaboration on a number of central questions in 3 and 4 manifold topology. He would bring expertise, on the topological side, of a kind that is not really present in the UK, and which is complementary to the strengths that we have in the more geometrical and analytical aspects of these questions. Developments in the last few years show that it is important to combine both of these aspects (for example in the remarkable work of Gompf and Fintushel and Stern). Ruberman's visit would be a substantial and timely stimulus to the research work in this field in Oxford and also in other centres in the UK.
