Summary on Grant Application Form
An increasingly competitive market place requires that we reduce production costs in the steel and aluminium industries. One long term goal is to cast a near-net shape which requires a minimum of hot and cold work to achieve the final product. The development of twin-roll and twin-belt casters to produce thin slabs and strip is one route forward. However, edge-containment in such casters has proved to be a significant problem. Magnetic confinement may provide one means of resolving this. We shall:a) investigate the levitation process theoretically;b) perform scales, low-temperature experiments on wood's metal to test the validity of our modelling and optimise the process; andc) perform full-scale experiments on a twin-roll (aluminium) caster at Oxford University.
