Summary on Grant Application Form
Flow in the molten sump of a semi-continuously-cast ingot is complex and poorly understood. However, it has a fundamental influence on the as-cast structure of ingots. We aim to develop an analytical model of natural and forced convection in the sump of a semi-continuously-cast ingot, and to compare our model predictions with velocity and temperature measurements made in a low-melting-point simulation of a sump. Our motivation is to understand better the influence of bulk metal flow on macrosegregation, particularly in the context of aluminium casting. At a fundamental level an analytical approach is needed to identify and clarify the subtle and complex interactions which occur in the sump. Our analytical study will compliment existing numerical investigations of sump flows.
