This is a theoretical programmes, complementing the experimental programme of the applicant, currently supported by SERC. The theoretical expertise will be provided by two collaborators (from the National Hellenic Foundation for research in Athens), Dr J. Waite and Dr. M. G. Papadopoulos who are experienced in this field. The programme seeks to apply advanced theoretical methods (both at the ab initio and semi-empirical level) to develop an understanding of the very large optical non-linearities associated with mixed valence chromophores. The programme requires superconducting resources, and provides for travel to consultation with the collaborators, involving 6 visits over the 2 year period.
