Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Zwitterion materials DEMI and its analogues are currently synthesised at the University of Durham and have demonstrated high dipole-moments and hyperpolarizabilities. The ultrafast third-order non-linearity of organic materials has been shown to increase approximately linearly with the second order non-linearity in donor-pi-acceptor molecules, which makes DEMI series specially attractive since the off-resonance second order hyperpolarizability is among the largest of those measured. We shall use subpicosecond laser techniques to make a comparative study. The same material may be doped easily into polymer films to produce photorefractive materials, which property we shall also study for a range of laser-pulse timescales. The main advantage in using DEMI and its analogues in the latter application area is that large in plane electro-optic coefficients are available for use. This is vital in demonstrating devices of practical value.
