Summary on Grant Application Form |
Heavy fermion intermetallic compounds are fascinating examples of strongly correlated electron systems, showing a wide variety of ground states-magnetic, superconducting, simple Fermi liquid and recently semiconducting. We shall explore the changes between these states produced by alloying using measurements of resistivity, susceptibility, magnetisation and, where appropriate, neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation. The main four types of alloys to be examined will be: (a) those based on the Kondo insulator/ antiferromagnetic metal UNiSn; (b) the Laves phase compounds between UA12 and CeAl2; (c) the Laves with Co of Ce and Y (doped with A1); (d) the (U,Y)Ru2Si2 alloy system.
