Summary on Grant Application Form
The researchers will obtain data on processing/structure/property relationships for a reactive laser cladding process which aims to enhance the wear resistance of components. The work is relevant to aerospace applications and will be concentrated on improving the wear resistance of tips of titanium alloy compressor blades. The novel process involves the production of composite clad layers of aluminides reinforced by ceramics (e.g. TiN, TiC, TiB2) using mixtures of powders and a gas phase; the reinforcement phase is formed in situ by reaction between the powder and gas. Data to be determined include thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of gas-metal reactions, structural stability of clad layers at elevated temperatures and wear and oxidation behaviour.
