The project is to investigate how to support the needs of both designers and users in the creation of interactive systems. The investigations will consider how representations of user requirements and designs can be used to facilitate better communication between users and designers. The aim is to enable designers and users to understand the context and constraints of the design space and to envision and evaluate alternative design solutions.Progress:The project has just recruited the research staff and the second research assistant is due to join the project on 1/4/95 (from the Netherlands). Further developments of task and design modelling tools developed under the previous SERC/DTI funded ADEPT project are in progress. Investigations of the nature of representations in design have begun from a theoretical consideration of the form and function of the different used representations in design. Further theoretical work is considering the nature of participation between users and designers in software design. In April we plan to commence studies of communication between designers and users and design practices.Three position papers have been submitted to the CHI95 Basic Research Symposium and a tutorial is to be given at the INTERACT 95 conference in Norway in July.
