Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal seeks support for two named PDRA's and technical and secretarial staff to carry out two projects in the synthesis of new functional polymers.1. To apply the thermal cyclisation of enediynes to benzene-1, 4-diyls as a new method of generating polyaromatic polymers and as a new radical initiator for two directional radical chain polymerisation reactions.Gas phase polymerisations will be carried out to cause vapour phase deposition and polymerisation of the newly formed radical intermediates. Strained enediynes will be generated chemically in solution and used as radical initiators for a variety of polymerisations.2. To employ inositol derivatives as rigid templates for polymerisation reactions in which the inositol is either covalently attached to the polymer chain or is a recognition site for network polymerisation. myo-Inositol will be conformationally locked through its ortho ester and then incorporated in a variety of functional polymers. Release of the ortho ester will allow the constrained axial hydroxyl groups to be used in metal ion chelation, carbohydrate recognition phenomena and affinity chromatography.
