Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project involves the development of a unique instrument, capable of investigating the dynamics of thermally excited dilational waves in molecular films at liquid surfaces or interfaces. The basic concept is that such waves will involve fluctuations in molecular density in the films. Optical second harmonic generation is specifically sensitive to such changes in surface density. By studying the time evolution of the second harmonic field arising from a density fluctuation of known wavelength, we will probe the dilational dynamics. The instrument will extend the frequencies over which surface dilational waves can be probed (presently limited to less than 10 Hz) to the range kHz to MHz. The proposed instrument is based upon our present surface light scattering system and will build upon our internationally recognised expertise in this area.We will apply this instrument to a variety of systems of current scientific interest, from insoluble monolayers to surface films of soluble surfactants. In initial experiments molecules selected for high hyperpolarisability will be used. We will subsequently work to improve the sensitivity to permit investigation of conventional amphiphiles.
