I propose to construct an instrument with which it will be possible to non-destructively measure the properties of solids in 3-dimensions. This may be achieved by exploiting the versatile and unique properties of a variable energy electron beam. An electron beam may be used to induce solids to emit light, ie cathodoluminesce. At low temperatures, the cathodoluminscence spectrum is very sensitive to the properties of the solid, such as the solid's crystal structure, composition, strain, impurity/doping and defect concentrations. By positioning a tightly focused electron beam at every point on the solid's surface and obtaining a cathodoluminescence spectrum at each point, a high resolution 2-dimensional map of a sample's properties can be produced. Information in the 3rd dimension, ie depth information is obtained by exploiting the unique property of a variable energy beam to deposit energy at a depth which depends on its kinetic energy. By varying the electron beam energy from 1keV to 30keV for example, it is possible to interrogate a typical sample from a depth of 20nm to a depth of 4 microns. To reiterate, an instrument based on a tightly focused, variable energy electron beam would be capable of providing high resolution, 3-dimensional, analytical information on solids.
