This project investigates correlation effects in coupled, layered electron-hole systems in a magnetic field, with the objective of interpreting experimental data on two physical realisations of such systems being studied in Oxford and internationally: 1) photoluminescence in semiconductor heterostructures containing a two-dimensional electron gas at high magnetic field and a (spatially-separate) photo-excited hole gas. 2) cyclotron and magneto-oscillation measurements in charge transfer salts containing layers of quasi-one-dimensional electrons and quasi-two-dimensional holes. Before attempting to interpret experimental data, we will need to investigate the generic properties of coupled, layered electron-hole systems in their own right. In particular we will investigate the interplay of cyclotron (kinetic) energy an band structure effects in the presence of three types of many-body interaction: electron-electron, electron-hole and even hole-hole. We will employ two complementary approaches: (a) cluster-model calculations for electrons and holes. In particular, solutions will be sought of model Hamiltonians derived directly from the Schrodinger equation fro N interacting electrons and holes in restricted geometries (b) develop approximate solutions of various phenomenological many-body Hamiltonians based, among others, on Hubbard-type models, and effective Langrangians involving order parameters.
