Summary on Grant Application Form
The experimental work proposed in this application will use a recently developed stress analysis tool known as SPATE (Stress Pattern Analysis by Thermal Emissions) system. The SPATE system incorporates a highly sensitive infra-red detector which permits the measurement of the small temperature change induced in a body subjected to cyclic stresses due to the thermoelastic effect. The temperature change is directly proportional to the sum of the principal stresses in the body. The proposal centres on the examination of two topics which are of current interest in the field of experimental mechanics. The first deals with contact stresses developed in pin-loaded lugs. The SPATE technique provides a unique opportunity to examine the variations in the stresses in the lug due to different inter-facial conditions at the pin-lug contact arc. The second aspect of the work will exploit the high resolution and non-contact nature the SPATE equipment in a quantitative study of crack-tip stress fields.
