Summary on Grant Application Form |
The principal objective of the work is to collect, by a series of wind tunnel tests, PIV and unsteady pressure data for the flow around a horizontal axis wind turbine and to use this data to validate and further develop an unsteady aerodynamic model for yawed flow. Code development will be in a phased, semi-empirical manner making use of experimental Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) data to define both wake convection and, in conjunction with pressure measurement, local blade aerodynamics. The experiments will be performed in a large wind tunnel (working section dimensions of 1.61m by 2.13m) and modelled using the HAWT code in conjunction with a representation of the tunnel walls to account for interference and blockage. Aerofoil performance data at appropriate test Reynolds number will be collected and used in the modelling process. The work will result in the provision of a fast and validated unsteady aerodynamic model for horizontal axis wind turbines. It is anticipated that the developed code will be capable of considering yaw and dynamic inflow and will, thus, have the potential of providing input data to both aero-acoustic and aero-elastic models. The speed of the code will render it suitable for iterative design calculations.
