We seek a detailed, but broad, microscopic understanding of the interplay between disorder and electron interactions in determining the electric and magnetic properties of condensed phase systems, via study of both spatially and site-disordered Anderson-Hubbard models. A two-fold strategy will be adopted: first, to ascertain the single-particle mean field ground states; secondly to examine collective excitations about the resultant inhomogeneous states. Techniques we have recently developed will enable the study to be undertaken. Mean field phases in the appropriate disorder-interaction planes must first be established, including magnetic and metallic/insulating phases, and their phase boundaries. Since local moment formation occurs on an inhomogeneous scale, investigation of static linear response properties will permit study of eg the inhomogeneous local magnetic susceptibilities of the system, and their evolution with disorder as a metal-insulator transition is approached. Likewise, dynamic collective excitations - such as spin waves, their spectral densities and localisation characteristics - will similarly be examined; as too will charge excitations and the electrical conductivity. We will also study both the feedback of quantum fluctuations into single-particle properties; and finite-T effects in particular relation to the low frequency transverse spin excitations.
