Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme has as its aim the understanding of the magnetic anisotropy of magnetic multilayers Fe/M where M is a magnetic or non magnetic metal. Multilayer samples will be fabricated by sputtering, MBE and electroplating and characterised by x-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, RHEED and transmission electron microscopy. The magnetic anisotropy will be measured using Mossbauer spectroscopy in applied fields and by measuring hysteresis cycles of the samples. The measurement of the total magnetic anisotropy energy per atom in a variety of samples in which metal M layer thickness and fabrication method are varied will be analysed to identify the roles of competing microscopic mechanisms in the total magnetic anisotropy energy.
