Summary on Grant Application Form
SCORIM (Shear controlled orientation in injection moulding) is an important new technology which uses in-mould shearing to control molecular and filler orientation in composites, and to erase weld lines. The process originated at the Wolfson Centre for Materials processing at Brunel University, and is licensed by BTG. Its development has now reached the stage where a more fundamental understanding and predictive capabilities are highly desirable to assist with its optimal use and exploitation. The proposed collaborative project links the Wolfson Centre (Prof M J Bevis) and their industrial collaborators with Dr J Pittman at Swansea, whose group has an established reputation in mathematical modelling and computer simulation at Swansea will run closely parallel to carefully designed experimental work at Brunel. Staged development of simulation for unfilled resins are planned, and will be guided and validated by experiment. Additionally fundamental studies of flow and orientation of filled resins in SCORIM will be undertaken, leading to a mathematical model of the complex phenomena involved, and with a view to incorporating this in computer simulations.
