Summary on Grant Application Form
To investigate design and realisation techniques for a new type of ceramic based waveguide filter for application in personal communications systems and wireless local area networks. To develop CAD tools for these devices based on field theoretic methods. To demonstrate the designs with experimental prototype devices. To evaluate the performance of these devices in specific systems applications.Progress:A supply of ceramic materials has been procured from a manufacturer. These materials were specified with a relative permittivity of 38 and a loss tangent of less than 0.0001 at 2 GHz. Testing of these materials is being carried out and initial results are encouraging, suggesting a suitable source of materials has been identified. Methods of metal plating of ceramics are presently being investigated. No conclusive data has yet been obtained.A computer program has been written for the design and simulation of simpler classes of filter. The program uses electromagnetic field simulation based on the mode matching method, combined with numerical optimisation techniques.Designs from the computer program are to be tested by constructing non-ceramic (i.e. conventional waveguide) scale model filter. This has been designed and is presently under construction.
