Summary on Grant Application Form
One important application for precision worm gears is for the accurate transfer of motion, as in machine tools, robots and other precision machinery. Demands for higher machinery performance place greater demands on the accuracy of worm gears. For the highest accuracy they have to be designed and made using semi-empirical rules and shop floor job knowledge, and for ultimate accuracy as matched pairs. If further advances are to be made then a more fundamental approach is needed. This will involve the identification and quantification of current error sources, and for this a machine tool and gear manufacturer will collaborate. The errors will be incorporated into a mathematical model to predict kinematic errors. The model will be validated using a new and unique test rig, which simulates operating conditions. The refined and validated model will then be used to produce optimised gears, with a target of halving errors and eliminating the need for matched pairs. From this work a set of design and manufacturing guidelines will be produced to achieve the highest possible accuracy in precision work gears. This application for a grant is to cover the cost of the student for a third year and for the cost of the test rig only.
