Summary on Grant Application Form |
An increasingly competitive market place requires that we reduce production costs in the steel and aluminium industries. One long term goal is to cast a near-net shape which requires a minimum of hot and cold work to achieve the final product. The development of twin-roll and twin-belt edge-containment in such castors has proved to be significant problem. Magnetic confinement may provide one means of resolving this. We shall; a) investigate the levitation process theoretically; b) perform scaled low temperature experiments on wood's metal to test the validity of our modelling and optimise the process; and c) perform full scale experiments on a twin-roll caster at Oxford University.
