The overall purpose of the programme is to evaluate some small but fast liquid crystal electro-optic effects and to enhance the optical effect to develop them into a form suitable for incorporation in devices. This incorporation will be included as part of the programme. The programme is a collaboration between the Chemistry Department at Hull, the Physics Department at Exeter and the Engineering Department at Cambridge. Cambridge will co-ordinate this inter-University project. They will evaluate the effects found in materials produced at Hull which include: the electroclinic effect in chiral smectic liquid crystals; the electroclinic effect in chiral nematic liquid crystals and biaxial nematic liquid crystals switching. The materials will be optically evaluated by Exeter and suitable effects will be incorporated into simple active backplane devices. Cambridge has world-class skills in the difficult area of fabricating chiral smectic electro-optic cells, and has a newly equipped Photonics Fabrication Unit for building test structures.
