The proposed programme is aimed at establishing the factors that determine the long-term durability of grc composites made with special cementitious matrices. Pastes incorporating various proportion of Portland cement, calcium sulphoaluminate, metakaolin and ground granulated blastfurnace slag will be characterised with regard to pore solution composition and solid phase morphology. Continuously aligned grc composites will be made using the special cements with commercially available alkali resistant glass fibres. The tensile stress-strain relationships for the composites will be determined after different storage times in environments with controlled temperature and RH. The microstructure of the composites will be investigated at corresponding times. Comparison of mechanical behaviour with microstructure should lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms governing engineering property changes in grc with time, and the usefulness of conventional accelerated ageing tests.
